The Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC) was established in 1977 by the Government of Liberia under the Ministry of Youth and Sports to provide technical and vocational education for young Liberians. The institution was created to equip youth with practical, industry-relevant skills, promote self-employment, and develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting national development.
During the years of Liberia's civil conflict, MVTC experienced significant setbacks, including damage to its infrastructure, limited resources, and reduced training capacity. Despite these challenges, the institution continued to serve as one of the country's principal public technical and vocational education centers.
A major milestone was achieved in 2015, when the Government of the People's Republic of China funded the construction and refurbishment of the MVTC campus at a cost of approximately US$9 million. The modernized facility, officially dedicated on 18 November 2015, includes classrooms, workshops, laboratories, a library, dormitories, administrative buildings, and other facilities designed to accommodate more than 1,000 students and strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Liberia.
In 2026, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, launched a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at transforming MVTC into a modern, demand-driven center of excellence. The reforms include expanding access to training, providing students with free uniforms and practical training materials, introducing modern equipment, strengthening institutional governance, improving financial management through a dedicated MVTC account, aligning training programs with labor market demands, and enhancing partnerships with industry to improve graduate employability. These initiatives are intended to reposition MVTC as Liberia's flagship institution for technical and vocational education and youth skills development.
